White Truffle Season in Tuscany

October marks the start of season of the tartufo bianco,  the white truffle, prized across Italy for its rarity and intense aroma. Much of our 500-hectare estate is woodland, home to deer, wild boar, and — from October through November — these most sought-after truffles. The forests around the Villa remain part of a Tuscan tradition that has endured for centuries and still returns each autumn.

TRUFFLE HUNTING EXCURSIONS

Available from 1 October – 3 November 2025

How does truffle hunting work? In the early morning, with mist still hanging over the hills, you’ll set off from Villa Lena in a forest-green SUV alongside our expert guides and their truffle dogs. In small groups, you’ll walk for around two hours through the woods, learning about the forest’s history as a sacred place for the Etruscans. Along the way, listen for the calls of birds, follow the tracks of wild boar, and watch the dogs as they uncover signs of hidden white truffles.

After the hunt, you’ll return to the villa carrying the prized tartufo bianco.

At Villa Lena, truffles found in the morning are enjoyed the same day, over a plate of fresh, handmade pasta. The hunt flows into a hands-on culinary workshop and a truffle lunch at Osteria San Michele, where the morning’s discoveries are brought straight to the table in the dishes you’ve helped make.

For guests wishing to immerse themselves fully in the season, Villa Lena offers a Truffle Hunting Experience package: a two-hour woodland hunt, pasta workshop, and a light truffle lunch, paired with your stay on the estate. Daily breakfast is included with all stays.
