Local Tuscany

Although there is much to see and do on the Villa Lena estate, we are highly passionate about our surroundings. Conveniently located between Florence and Pisa, our agriturismo is also near two medieval gems: San Gimignano and San Miniato are both under 40 minutes away by car, but there is much more to discover. Some of our favorite things to do in the local area…

Hiking and swimming

Plenty of hikes are accessible from our doorstep. Follow our signposted trails to reach the best viewpoints on the estate, or stroll up to Toiano for a picture-perfect panoramic sunset spot.

Seeking a swim? Villa Lena may be tucked away in the Tuscan hills, but we’re not far from the beach or beautifully wild swimming spots. The elegant town of Forte dei Marmi and the relaxed beaches of Cecina are all a short drive away. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even visit a local hot spring or waterfall.

Markets and festivals

Italy is famous for its bustling antique markets and festivals celebrating seasonal culinary delicacies. The flea markets in Lucca and Arezzo offer a rich variety of vintage textiles, clothing, furniture, and other unique finds for an exceptional value. We also love the cherry festival held every June in Lari, San Miniato’s white truffle fair in November, and the famous Palio in Siena, which takes place in July and August.

Visits to picturesque towns

Aside from the nearby cities of Pisa, Lucca, and Florence, there are many wonderful towns in the vicinity to discover. In San Gimignano, admire the artwork at Galleria Continua, savor the local Vernaccia wine, and wander through charming cobbled streets while appreciating the beautifully preserved medieval architecture.

In Volterra, explore the Etruscan museum and ancient amphitheater. Explore the village of Lari, with its Renaissance fortress known as Castello dei Vicari and beloved family-run Martelli pasta factory. In San Miniato, climb the Tower of Frederick II and have lunch at Sergio Falaschi’s butcher shop with panoramic countryside views.

Strolls through Italian gardens

Tuscany is home to some of Italy’s most enchanting gardens, from Villa Reale di Marlia in Lucca to La Foce in the Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany. Closer to Villa Lena, Florence boasts the world-famous Boboli and Bardini gardens, not to mention the lesser known but still exquisite gardens at Villa Gamberaia and Villa Castello.

For more information about where to go and what to see, don’t hesitate to ask our reception staff for ideas upon arrival.
