A Letter from Karimah Hassan:
\nTo, From and For Villa Lena<\/h1>\n

I woke to the sound of birds. Always the birds, and sometimes, if I was lucky enough to catch the moment without disturbing it, the soft padded steps of fawns slipping back into the forest as though the night itself were retreating into the trees. The air held that particular autumn crispness that belongs to Tuscany in October: not yet winter, but already thoughtful about it. In that golden, turning light I fell into a rhythm so quietly natural that I barely noticed it forming, only that my body began waking before the sun and my feet learned the path between the house, the studio and the hills almost instinctively.<\/p>\n

Each morning I would step out to catch the mist still hanging low in the valley, watching the hills ignite briefly with that famous Tuscan sunrise that painters have been chasing since the Renaissance. I had come, if I\u2019m honest, in search of that light. The myth of it. The kind of light that turns ordinary fields into something biblical, and makes olive trees appear lit from within. I was not disappointed. But what I did not expect was how quickly the light stopped being the magnet. Instead, it was the flowers that caught my heart.<\/p>\n

The rhythm of the residency took hold in a way that felt both disciplined and strangely romantic. Wake. Write. Paint. Repeat. A studio within walking distance is a quiet luxury that alters your understanding of work entirely. There is no commute between the life of the mind and the life of the day. You walk ten minutes through trees and suddenly you are painting. You return for lunch and someone has placed fruit from the garden on the table and the conversation drifts easily between artists, cooks, groundsmen, the \u00a0occasional wandering guest, all of us participating in the same gentle choreography of a place that has been doing this for much longer than we have.<\/p>\n

What surprised me most was not the architecture or the landscape, though both are beautiful in that calm, unfussy Tuscan way. It was the garden. The flowers holding on stubbornly to their last bloom. The vegetables arriving at dinner, the figs, the herbs, the late tomatoes still catching sunlight. There was something deeply reassuring about living alongside that cycle, watching nature do what it does without ceremony.<\/p>\n

By the time I arrived the wedding season was folding itself away. The larger groups departed, the estate exhaled, and Villa Lena became quieter, ready to pack up for an overdue rest. It felt like being present for the last act of summer: the late bloomers, the final warmth in the air, the sun lingering just a little longer on the hills before slipping away earlier each evening. Those sunsets became their own ritual, a slow unwinding of the day where the hills turned first gold, then pink, then that deepening blue that arrives when the temperature drops and the crickets begin again. What I learned there was not something grand or philosophical, but something simpler and perhaps more difficult to practice in ordinary life. Patience, attention and the humility of working within rhythms that do not belong to you.<\/p>\n

In cities we pretend time bends to our schedules, our emails, our deadlines. At Villa Lena you are reminded that the world has its own tempo. The mist will lift when it lifts. The fruit ripens when it ripens. The light arrives when it arrives. And if you are paying attention, if you have the discipline to show up quietly each day with a brush or a notebook, something remarkable begins to happen-you start to belong to that rhythm too. By the end of the residency I realised I had not simply come in search of golden light. I had come to remember how to look for it.<\/p>\n

And for that, I am deeply grateful.<\/p>\n

Karimah Hassan is a London-based multidisciplinary artist whose work blends spoken word, painting and spirituality into immersive explorations of memory and identity.
